Club Recognizes two MA Chapter Activists!
July 30, 2011 - MA Chapter activists Anne Carroll and Bob Murphy will be recognized
for their volunteer contributions at the Sierra Club’s 2011 annual
awards celebration in San Francisco on Friday, Sept 23, 2011.
Cape Cod & Islands Group member Bob Murphy will receive the Club’s
Special Service Award for over forty years of volunteer contributions.
During the Chapter’s early years, Bob wore the various hats of office
manager, newsletter editor and Boston Harbor Islands volunteer. More
recently, Bob has used his work experience, education and position in
the community to bring attention and resources to environmental justice
issues.
Boston Inner City Outings (ICO) Chair Anne Carroll will receive the Madelyn Payeatt Award,
which honors a Sierra Club member who has made outstanding contributions
through working with youth. Anne began volunteering with Boston ICO in 1998, and in 2004 she became
the chair, overseeing the
revitalization of Boston ICO. Under Anne’s continuing leadership, Boston
ICO has funded, organized, and led over 75 trips, bringing more than 1300
youth on outdoor trips.

Salem Coal Plant Announces Closing
June 30, 2011 - After years of fighting for the closure of Salem Harbor Coal Plant,
the New England electric grid operator has proposed upgrades to the
transmission system that clears the last hurdle to finally retire this
filthy plant. The closure of this plant is a success story for all of
the citizens of Massachusetts. The shutdown of Salem Harbor Generating
Station is a symbol of things to come; all across the country, economic
conditions, citizen activism that springs from health concerns, and
common-sense pollution regulations are changing America’s energy
