27th Middlesex (Somerville)

Too often, voters are confronted with choosing between two mediocre candidates. In the upcoming 27th Middlesex (Somerville) race for state representative, however, voters have two stellar choices: Denise Provost and Elizabeth Moroney. Both candidates are true environmentalists and have worked extensively with the Sierra Club on a variety of legislative and environmental issues in the past.

A member of the Somerville Planning Board, Elizabeth Moroney has been responsible for writing many of the state's key environmental legislation when she was chief-of-staff to state Sen. Pam Resor. She was the author of the landmark Article 97 Bill that protects urban parks and open space. Elizabeth has made the environment one of the cornerstones of her campaign and her priorities for the legislature include open space protection, toxic chemical reduction, and recycling promotion.

Since being elected to the Board of Aldermen, Denise Provost has been an outspoken advocate for open space, responsible stewardship of resources, and improved mass transit. She is a committed environmentalist having raised the profile of a variety of tough environmental issues, including Environmental Justice - a crucial issue for a polluted, post-industrial city like Somerville. Over the years, she has worked to promote public policies that will repair and sustain the health of the natural world.

Due to the strengths of both the candidates in this race and our longstanding ties to each of them, the Sierra Club is not endorsing in this race. Nevertheless, we urge our members to make their own choice and to VOTE on January 10, Primary Day.
